Supply list:

Fabric

  • ¼ yard each of eight fabrics shaded light to dark OR eight fat quarters
  • 2/3 yards light fabric for center area
  • 3  yards dark fabric for center area, outer borders, and binding

(Note:  It is very important to have a VERY dark and a VERY light fabric)

Other supplies needed

  • Sewing machine in good working order
  • Cutting mat and rotary cutter with sharp blade
  • Ruler (12” square or one you use to cut strips)
  • Thread
  • Seam Ripper (just in case)
  • Straight Pins
  • Large piece of flannel or batting to use as a design board
  • Travel Iron (Optional)
  • Masking tape

**NOTEIn order to save class time, students need to do some pre-cutting prior to class.  Also, please come to class with a very sharp blade in your cutter.

Using your shaded fat quarters (or ¼ yd cuts), number them from one through eight with one being the lightest fabric and eight being the darkest fabric.

If using fat quarters, (a fat quarter is approximately 18” x 21”), you will be cutting strips lengthwise (parallel to the selvedge edge).  Follow these cutting instructions for each of the eight fat quarters.  Remove the selvedge edge to straighten the edge.  Cut a 3” strip along the cut selvedge edge to make one 3” x 18” strip.  Now, cut eight (8) 2” strips along the same edge for 8 strips 2” x 18”.

If using ¼ yard cuts,  (a piece of fabric approximately 9” x 42”), you will be cutting strips both lengthwise and widthwise.  Follow these cutting instructions for each of the eight ¼ yard cuts.  Leaving the piece folded, remove the selvedge edges to straighten the edges.  Cutting through both layers, cut a 3” strip to make two (2) 3” x 9” strips.  Now, cut four (4) 2” strips widthwise.

From the very dark fabric (the 3 yd piece), cut:

Six (6) 7” x WOF (width of fabric) strips

Two (2) 16” squares

Bring all your fabric to class.
